Potatoes aren't simply a crop that's abundantly grown in Gangwon Province. According to records in Lee Gyu-gyeong's 『Oju Yeonmun Jangjeon Sango』, when potatoes first entered the Korean Peninsula in 1824, Gangwon Province was where they first took root.

In the 1920s, Nangok-myeon in Hoeyang County, Gangwon Province, introduced German varieties and developed Korea's first improved potato cultivars called 'Nangok 1, 2, and 3.' These potatoes, cultivated on a large scale in highland areas 650 meters above sea level, became widely known alongside the famous Geumgangsan tourism of that era.
