The Story Behind Gaetbae Pizza: Where Tradition Meets Flavor in Sokcho
"A slice of pizza puts a period at the end of your travel sentence."
Hello! Today, I'd like to share the special story behind our restaurant name 'Getbae Pizza' that many visitors to Sokcho are curious about.
Travelers often ask us, "What does 'Gaetbae' mean?" and "What's the connection to pizza?"
🚢 The 70-Year Legacy of Gaetbae
In Sokcho's Abai Village, there's a small ferry that has been carrying people across Cheongcho Lake for over 70 years. This is the 'Gaetbae' (갯배).
This small boat that slowly crosses the waterway by pulling steel cables through sea breeze isn't just a means of transportation. Operating by pulling fixed steel wires between both shores with hooks, it was a special connection linking people through human power.
"A boat crossing 50 meters of distance and 70 years of time — Gaetbae."
💔 Hope Blooming from the Pain of Division
During the Korean War in 1950, refugees from Hamgyeong Province settled across Cheongcho Lake, establishing what became Abai Village.
'Abai' is a Hamgyeong Province dialect word meaning 'father' or 'elder'.
What they believed would be temporary shelter until the war ended became their new home due to the division between North and South Korea. Missing their homeland, they created and shared hometown dishes like Hamhung naengmyeon (cold noodles), Abai sundae (blood sausage), and pickled flounder.
"Gaetbae was a bridge of hope connecting the longing and daily lives of displaced people."
