From Naples to Sokcho: The Global Journey of Pizza

Hello, this is Getbae Pizza.

Today, we'd like to go beyond our restaurant's story and follow the long journey of pizza as a food. We'll tell you how a single pizza evolved from a simple meal for poor Italian commoners to become food for people worldwide, and why Getbae Pizza insists on 'American handmade pizza' in Sokcho.

🇮🇹 Naples: The Birthplace of Pizza

In the late 1700s, on the streets of Naples, Italy.

Pizza was a humble food for common people—simple bread topped with tomatoes and olive oil, then baked. It was cheap and simple, but filling enough for a satisfying meal.

"Pizza grew from poor people's food to become food for the world."

In 1889, the pizza made for Queen Margherita of Savoy became today's Margherita pizza. The colors of tomato (red), mozzarella cheese (white), and basil (green) symbolized the Italian flag, transforming pizza from simple food into a cultural icon of Italy.

🇺🇸 Pizza's Reinvention in America

In the early 1900s, pizza reached American soil with Italian immigrants. Localized pizzas were born in cities like New York, Chicago, and Detroit.

New York Pizza: Thin, crispy dough with large slices folded for eating Chicago Pizza: Heavy deep-dish style loaded with cheese and sauce

"Pizza was reborn in America and leaped to become global food."

After World War II, American soldiers returned home remembering the pizza they ate in Europe, and pizza spread throughout America. Soon, pizza naturally expanded to places around the world where US troops were stationed, establishing itself alongside hamburgers as one of the world's most popular foods.

🇰🇷 Pizza Takes Root in Korea

Pizza first seriously entered Korea in the late 1970s.

In the 1980s-90s, major chain brands like Pizza Hut and Domino's arrived, and pizza quickly established itself as a 'symbol of dining out.' It was considered a menu for family outings, birthday parties, and special occasions.

However, chain-centered pizza prioritized efficiency and speed. Mass-produced dough from factories, standardized toppings, and cheese-heavy cooking methods transformed pizza into "filling food loaded with cheese."

"Korean pizza succeeded in popularization but missed the true charm of pizza."

Pizza's original deep flavors and the power to contain regional character and stories gradually disappeared.

🍕 Questioning Pizza Again in Sokcho

This is exactly why Getbae Pizza insists on American handmade pizza in Sokcho.

Pizza was originally food that required time and care, food that contained each region's ingredients and stories. We want to reclaim pizza's essence by putting Sokcho's urban charm and Gangwon Province's local ingredients on pizza.

"Getbae Pizza aims for pizza that simultaneously contains Sokcho's sensibility and New York's energy."

🌊 Pizza, Sokcho, and Our Philosophy

Sokcho is a city that embraces the sea, mountains, and stories of displaced people. Like the sundae and naengmyeon of Abai Village, and the potato pancakes and potato dumplings you can encounter everywhere, the food here has always contained people's lives and memories.

Getbae Pizza also wanted to contain the colors and stories of the Sokcho region through pizza, this global food. That's why our pizza isn't simply "a delicious meal," but aims to be a slice that makes travelers remember Sokcho and a whole pizza that residents can feel proud of.
